A foundation is an important element of a structure which connects it to the ground, transferring loads from the structure to the ground. Its purpose is to provide the structure`s stability from the ground.
In general, there are two types of foundations, and we will check bots:
1. SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS:
This type of building foundation transfers structural load to the earth very near to the surface. Customarily, a shallow foundation is considered as such when the width of the entire foundation is greater than its depth. This kind of foundation is the most used for relatively light structures due to be more economical.
Shallow foundation can be divided in:
- Wall footing or strip footing
- Isolated footing
- Combined footing
- Strap footing
- Mat foundation or Raft Foundation

2. DEEP FOUNDATIONS:
The main difference with shallow foundations consists in this type of foundation transfers building loads to the earth farther down from the surface to a subsurface or a range of depths. A Geotechnical engineer would recommend deep foundations over shallow for many reasons being the most common, very large design loads, poor soil at shallow depth or site constraints like property lines. A Pile or piling is the most common element of deep foundation.
Here are the types of deep foundation:
- Pile foundation
- Pier Foundation
- Drilled Shafts
- Caisson Foundation

Another important point with deep foundations is the machiney used to drive piles into the ground: Pile Driver, Diesel Hammer, Hydraulic hammer, Vibratory pile driver, press-in pile driver.
to conclude the foundations are an essential component of construction that can be adjusted to the needs of any project, in future blog post we will be discussing shallow and deep foundations with more details, so keep an eye in our website.
