We all have had a bad experience at some point in the process of a project, the work takes longer than expected, canceled meetings or even half done jobs. We know how essential a contractor is to start a project, and most importantly, to be 100% sure about the people you are hiring.
There is an easy way to avoid many misunderstandings when hiring a contractor and that is to ask them a few simple questions before hiring them. Here are three essential questions to ask before making your decision.
1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?
This is an important question. Experience is primarily gained over time, meaning that the longer a contractor has been in business, the better their work will be. The other main benefit of a company that has been around a long time is, they are likely to have gained a good reputation in the areas they inhabit, so you will be able to corroborate the information they are supplying you with.
2. HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE?
Company size is not always an indicator of competence, but a contractor who has at least a few employees for specific jobs is more likely to be serious about their business and be able to handle larger scale repairs. When it comes to repairing a concrete driveway, for example, you’ll really want someone who has a lot of experience in concrete lifting, rather than an “all-rounder” who does a little concrete, a little plumbing, etc. A larger number of employees also indicates that the company is capable of operating as a legitimate business over time.
3. DOES IT OFFER A WARRANTY?
This is an important question. The best contractors back their work with some type of warranty. A contractor who offers a written guarantee on the work he performs is demonstrating that he is not a fly-by-night operation that will disappear the moment you hand him a check.
Pay attention to the way they speak and act. Do they seem willing to help you? Are they polite? Do they treat you with respect? Asking these questions and paying attention to a contractor’s attitude can go a long way toward ensuring a positive experience for you.
