Today we are going to talk about a type of foundation very common for modern residential projects, Concrete slab.
A slab consists of a flat, horizontal surface made of cast concrete. In many domestic and industrial buildings, a thick concrete slab supported on foundations or directly on the subsoil, is used to construct the ground floor.
There are different concrete slab foundation types which are depending on the span, length and strength of a building and the type of area.
1. T-Shaped
Called like this for the shape of the footing which looks like an upside-down T. Is a traditional and common method to support structure in areas where ground frezees. It can help support big and higher buildings.
A footing is placed below the frost line and then the walls are added on top. The footing is wider than the wall, providing extra support at the base of the foundation. A T-shaped foundation is placed and allowed to cure; second, the walls are constructed; and finally, the slab is poured between the walls.

2. Slab on grade
This kind of slab is typically used in areas where the ground does not freeze, and consist of a single layer of concrete, several inches thick and cascaded all at one time. Something to mention is it’s a little less pricey foundation to pour than the T shaped one.

3. Frost protected
Very similar to the slab-on-grade one, the dominant variation comes from the sheets of rigid, polystyrene covering laid on top of the gravel along the outside of the foundation wall before cascading the slab. This method only works with a heated structure.

As with any construction method, working with concrete slabs requires having the experience and knowledge to do it properly. We invite you to contact us with your project and we could guide you through the best option for you.
